According to an article filed by the Planning and Sustainability department on Monday, the US Post Office at 715 NW Hoyt Street will be relocated in 6-10 years. This particular post office is often referred as The Pearl District post office.
“Relocate the US Post Office and redevelop the site with a wide mix of urban uses including employment,” the article stated.
Although the site might not be redeveloped soon, the article also states the City plans to create a master plan and employment incentive plan by 2015. The master plan is to address design issues such as, “street and pedestrian connectivity, open space, views and transitions to adjacent uses.” This project is being lead by the Portland Development Commission (PDC), Planning and Sustainability (PBS), and a “private” implementer.
Regarding the Post Office site design, it seems the two biggest influences will be transportation and open space. The PBS would like, “accessible open space at Centennial Mills and the US Postal Service site as part of redevelopment.”
Transportation would be linked, too. “Provide a highly accessible, safe and well connected district, with additional connections through large sites and blocks,” said the PBS under the Transportation section. They will focus on incorporating spaces such a Jamison Square, Tanner Springs Park, and The Fields with the Post Office redevelopment.
